Addressing a meeting held on Tuesday regarding the growing crisis between Israel and Palestine, UN Secretary General Guterres said that the “heinous” attack by Hamas cannot be justified under any circumstances.
He said that it was important to recognize that the Palestinians were not in a state of zero, saying that the bombing and siege of Gaza was due to attacks by Hamas, and that it was not appropriate to punish them collectively.
After Guterres’ speech on Tuesday, Gilad Erdan, Israel’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, tweeted, “The Secretary-General’s speech tried to justify the brutal attack by Hamas. About 1,400 people were killed in the Hamas attack, most of whom were civilians.” He also demanded the resignation of the Secretary-General. . In addition, Secretary General Guterres’ visa was also threatened.
Similarly, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen also accused Guterres of supporting the terrorism of Hamas. He also canceled the scheduled meeting with the General Secretary on Tuesday.
After the meeting, on Tuesday, Secretary General Guterres met some families held hostage by Hamas and called for the unconditional release of all those held captive in Gaza in violation of international law.
He said to reporters outside the Security Council on Wednesday morning, “I am shocked that some of my statements have been misrepresented.”
Mentioning that he really spoke about the Palestinian grievances, he said that he told the Security Council that the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the terrible attacks of Hamas.
